Roads

Albania has about 18,000 km of roads, of which 7,450 km are considered “main”. While the government continues to invest heavily in road improvements, some major roads remain in poor condition and construction sites are often poorly signalled. Disregard for traffic rules is widespread. If you decide to drive around Albania, be careful and drive as defensively as possible. Better avoid traveling at night outside of the main urban areas, as road hazards are harder to see. Driving under the influence of alcohol and using a mobile phone is prohibited unless the driver is using a Bluetooth or other hands-free device.

Transport turnover

Traffic moves on the right, as in most other European countries.

Unless posted signs indicate otherwise, there is a speed limit of 50 km/h in urban centers and 90 km/h in rural areas.

Taxi service

Taxis are readily available in most cities in Albania, they are recognizable by their yellow color and most of them have a taxi meter. Fares are usually determined in advance based on distance travelled, but from time to time they can be negotiated in advance. Taxis are plentiful in Tirana and can be easily found on the street or left at one of the many taxi ranks throughout the city.

Intercity transport

Many buses are available for transportation to major cities in Albania. Traveling by bus is economical and provides a unique view of the countryside. Buses run almost exclusively during the day, but do not always run on the regular schedule. The approximate fare is between 1000 and 1200 for long distances like Tirana-Saranda.

Many travelers looking for public transportation choose to use private minibuses, which function as an alternative bus route system and operate almost entirely without schedules or set fares. However, before traveling in a van, you should consider the condition of the van as many of them operate as an informal business.

From Tirana the main routes are:

Buses heading south depart from the South Terminal (Terminali i Autobuzave te Jugut) near Skipon Square at 29 nentori Road
